Why prepare?
A CSS switch is relatively uncomplicated and usually done with just a few clicks. However, based on our years of experience as a CSS provider, we know that a switch can trigger a number of issues. In this guide, we explain what you should look out for during a switch and how you can completely avoid a commonly occurring problem.
1. Check current setup #
Before you start, please go through the following points:
• Current CSS Status: Does the MC currently run under the default Google CSS or under another CSS provider?. If the MC is currently running under another CSS provider, we recommend switching to the Google CSS before switching to your own CSS in order to be able to assign the Free Listings to the new CSS.
• Are Free Listings active? Are Free Listings enabled in the MC? If Free Listings are not running in the MC, you should ask yourself whether this is desired or not.
• Admin Access: Is there at least one admin in the MC? Ensure that at least one employee has admin access to the MC.
2. Instructions: Assign Free Listings in advance (Dummy MC Method) #
To be on the safe side, you can assign the listings before the actual switch takes place:
1. Create Dummy MC: Create a Dummy Merchant Center (MC) for the shop with the new CSS.
2. Adjust URL: In the Dummy MC under Business Information, change the shop URL to the exact URL under which the MC you want to switch is running.
3. Assignment in the old MC: If the MC to be switched is located at Google Shopping Europe, you can assign the free product listings before the switch as follows: under Settings > General > Comparison Shopping Services, the new CSS will now be listed and you can assign the Free Listings to it.
4. Perform Switch: Now carry out the MC switch.
5. Clean up: Delete the Dummy MC again.
3. Troubleshooting: Configuring Free Listings after an MC Switch #
